Soccer Aid's Damian Lewis left 'conflicted' as he recalls Helen McCrorie's emphatic support

Damian Lewis has admitted to feeling 'conflicted' as he prepares to play in Soccer Aid once again, recalling the emphatic support his late wife Helen McCrorie gave to the event.

Band of Brothers actor Damian has been a regular at the annual fundraising match for UNICEF, pulling on the England jersey on multiple occasions as the Three Lions, made up of celebs and England legends, do battle against the Rest of the World side. However as he joined another Soccer Aid veteran, Ben Shephard, on Thursday's Good Morning Britain to talk about this year's game on Sunday, June 12, he confessed the thought had crossed his mind that he could switch allegiances.

Speaking to Ben and his ITV co-host Kate Garraway via video call, Damian said that every time he plays in the match he thinks 'what if' about how things might have turned out if he tried to make it as a professional footballer, before adding: "I'm actually always conflicted when I come out at Soccer Aid as I'm half Welsh and every year I think 'should I ask to play for the Rest of the World?' but then I think 'well you can't play for England one year and then play for Rest of the World the next.'

"But especially with Wales coming through brilliantly at the weekend..." as Kate pleaded: "Don't jump ship now! They're already doing well enough, we need you."

Damian also spoke about just how big a support his late wife and Peaky Blinders star Helen was when it came to Soccer Aid. He explained: "When she came to Soccer Aid for the first time and I got to my hotel up in Manchester, The Lowry, it was covered in Union /jack bunting and England flags everywhere which she'd gone out and bought; so she's with us again this year."
