More extreme conditions including periods of very warm weather and torrential downpours could hit Britain in the future, it has been claimed.
Annual global temperatures are likely to be at least 1C above the levels they were before the industrial era in each year between 2020 and 2024, a long-range forecast by experts led by the Met Office shows.
And this could provoke some of the extreme spells of weather, reports the LiverpoolEcho.
The climate forecast also predicts there will be enhanced warming of the Arctic, compared to other regions of the world, and there will be an increased risk of storminess across the Atlantic Ocean.
Graham Madge of the Met Office said: "As the planet warms, the intensity, frequency and duration of extreme weather events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall is expected to increase.
"Corresponding decreases in cool weather events along with changes to dry spells are also expected."
And Dr Robert Dunn added: “Looking at the changing climate by studying the frequency of extreme weather events provides a different perspective on climate change, complementing other metrics such as annual average temperature rise.
"It is extreme weather events which make the impacts of climate change real for people, and these events also present the greatest shocks to human health and well-being, financial economies and of course, the biosphere."
Friday is expected to kick-start the next spell of warmer weather and the outlook is for brighter conditions with some sunny spells - though a few showers will persist.
Mainly dry and sunny spells are expected for the whole weekend which will also gradually become warmer.
Temperatures are expected to rise steadily reaching the mid-20s C in many areas and even higher in isolated spots in the southeast of England during the following week.
In the north it may stay more changeable with an ongoing risk of showers or longer spells of rain.
Although it may start to warm up for everyone during the second half of the month, it could remain unsettled with a risk of low pressure areas bringing heavy showers or thunderstorms up from the south or southwest.
