Coronavirus: Coronation Street and Emmerdale 'to continue filming' despite lockdown fears

Coronation Street and Emmerdale are reportedly continuing filming as usual despite the growing panic over the coronavirus.

Brits have now been told to stay away from pubs, restaurants and workplaces and in measures which are likely to cause chaos to TV schedules.

It had been suggested the virus would halt filming for soaps, forcing them to reduce to airing just two nights a week.

But now The Sun reports the filming schedule for the ITV soaps has not been disrupted and

It's also been revealed that a member of the Corrie cast who went into self-isolation 10 days ago after travelling to a virus hotspot is now back at work and did not develop symptoms.

The Sun also reported BBC's Graham Norton Show was struggling to fill the red sofa with A-listers after its James Bond film No Time To Die special was canned.

And now with several other Hollywood films being postponed, press junkets with the famous actors have also been cancelled, leaving Graham with no guests.

A source explained: "One option is to get more UK-based TV stars.

"People like Michael Palin and Miriam Margoyles are always great at telling a story.

"But are there enough of those people to fill the whole series and will it work without an audience?"

A Coronation Street boss confirmed that last night did not actually reference the coronavirus, because it was filmed months in advance, but it was a spooky coincidence.

Geoff Metcalfe reminded wife Yasmeen, who he had forced to clean the bathroom, to wash her hands thoroughly.

Before eating breakfast, Geoff said: "Hey, wash your hands first you’ve just had your arm jammed up a u-bend."

As Yasmeen got some soap and put her hands under the tap, Geoff asked: "You are singing happy birthday twice over in your head like I told you?"

Geoff then tried to convince Yasmeen to move to Cyprus by claiming the UK is "no place for old folk in the winter".

While it may seem like a spooky prediction, it's all part of ITV's push to remind soap viewers about hand-washing.

Speaking about Coronation Street and Emmerdale, ITV Studios creative director John Whiston said: "Because we script and shoot so far in advance we don't generally reflect contemporary issues.

"However we are going to use the soaps to remind people of important public health issues such as the need to wash their hands. We'll try and do more such messages going forward."
