Teams of DIY soapbox racers are set to rally through Herrington Country Park for a second time.
Last year, the UK Soapbox Challenge held its debut race in Sunderland . The competition challenges teams to build their own soapbox go-karts, which they race down a 450-metre track, full of twists and turns, with Penshaw Monument providing a stunning backdrop.
The Soapbox Challenge is hurtling back to Sunderland this summer. On Saturday, August 17, 50 racers will compete, with prizes awarded for fastest time, best in show and more.
A fun fair, live music and craft fair are also planned for the day, with local food and a beer tent too.
Event director Martin Tulip said: "Last year built a great foundation for what we aim to be a solid feature in the North East’s event, scheduled for years to come. 2019 sees our return to Herrington Country Park with some massive improvements. A much better staring ramp will propel soapboxes at a much faster pace down our redesigned track.
"We’ve spent a lot of time working on the live music offering, bringing everything together to create a great family day out. There’s also a number of free activities taking place across the day as well as funfair rides, attractions, and a large food selection. We guarantee a great day out for people of all ages."
