Soap factory fire fuelled by essential oils fills air with hazardous smoke

Factory fire in Kardinya

A soap manufacturing firm says it is devastated after its factory was gutted by fire, sending plumes of hazardous smoke into the air in the Perth suburb of Kardinya.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at the Aussie Soap Supplies premises on Bowen Street shortly after 4.30am today.

The fire spread to a neighbouring unit, but was eventually brought under control around 8.00am.

A hazardous materials alert was issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), warning of smoke in the area.

Incident Controller Garth Lawrence told ABC Perth the fire took some time to contain.

"Most of the stuff that is burning is essential oils, used to manufacture soap," Mr Lawrence said.

'Shattered' business owners take stock

In a post on Facebook, the owners of Aussie Soap Supplies said they were devastated by the fire.

"As you can imagine, on top of everything else this year has thrown at all of us, it certainly is devastating news," the post stated.

"We ask for your understanding as we navigate this incredibly stressful time and we will keep you updated on the situation as much as we can."

Mr Lawrence said crews were monitoring air quality and water runoff from the fire, but there was no indication of any long-term pollution.

The DFES HAZMAT alert covers people in surrounding suburbs, including Willagee, O'Connor, Samson, Beaconsfield, and White Gum Valley.

People in those areas with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions have been advised to stay indoors and follow their pre-prepared treatment plans.
