So you’re saying there’s a chance we can have an ‘Anyone But You’ sequel, Sydney Sweeney?

Rom-coms are so back (sort of) and we have Anyone But You to thank for continuing the trend. The Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney movie kicked off 2024 with a Shakespearean bang and left us all singing “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.

Powell played Ben and Sweeney was Bea, two people who had a romantic night together that was filled with grilled cheeses and falling asleep on the couch together but ended with them misunderstanding each other. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, it was a nice return to the romantic comedies of the early 00s that I missed very dearly. And now Sweeney is teasing us with more of Ben and Bea.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Sweeney was talking about the potential of returning to Ben and Bea’s world and gave us a little hope. Not a lot of hope, just a little bit. “Ummmmm! You’ll just have to wait and see. It’s not a no, and it’s not a yes. It’s a, ‘I don’t have an answer that I can say for you.'” So that’s not a no which is a GOOD thing at least.

I understand that original movies, especially romantic comedies, are great but what is special about Anyone But You is that the movie made a lot of money for a early release. The film made $220 million worldwide on a budget of $25 million. That’s a pretty great deal and so it isn’t surprising to me that fans (and press) want to know if we’re going to get a sequel to the film.

Sweeney, who was a producer on it, not confirming or denying the idea of a second film is a good thing in my opinion. And hey, imagine if they put these two characters in another Shakespeare play! It’d be great.
