When James Stride didn’t get into his first-choice university, he instantly hit the phones to find a course linked to his love of writing. But while he was placed in a queue by various institutions, Coventry University picked up straight away.
Three years later, James is graduating from Coventry with a degree in journalism and media, and has a job in social media. “I wouldn’t have the qualifications, job or life I have now if I hadn’t got through to Coventry’s clearing hotline,” he says. He isn’t alone. More and more students are discovering that Coventry University is going places.
Check out the numbers: it’s now ranked 15th in the Guardian University Guide 2016 – up 12 places from last year. And it’s number one in the UK for student satisfaction, according to the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
There’s a huge range of courses to choose from at Coventry but they all have one thing in common: real value in the real world. The Faculty of Business and Law has a standalone Employability and Placement Unit, and its courses – which range from economics to event management – have close links with major corporations
and institutions.
Alumni from the Faculty of Art and Humanities include the Queen’s portrait painter, James Lloyd, and designers at many of the top styling studios around Europe, such as Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover, Lotus and BMW.
The £55m, state-of-the-art Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing building allows students to study industry-specific subjects including aerospace and motorsports in the most up-to-date surroundings, while the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences boasts a mock operating theatre and a crime scene laboratory to enable students to get the most out of their studies.
And, of course, university life isn’t all work. If exercise is your thing, you’ll love the University’s sports centre, with masses of classes on offer. Or if the live music scene is more your style, check out TheHub, the all-in-one centre for student living where you can hang out, see bands and grab a pizza.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying Coventry University,” says Nicole Andre. She’s about to graduate with a degree in sociology and will then return to the university for her master’s. “Coventry offers so much more than just study. The library is fantastic, there’s help with employability and placements, and you can attend seminars and workshops in different faculties to help broaden your knowledge. The atmosphere is great. I enjoy the diversity of students and lecturers and feel confident to embrace my own personality. It’s a direct route to the career path I’m interested in, so the opportunities are endless.”
