Each year, Sydney’s St John’s College is is transformed for an all-French music and picnic in the sun. Guests are encouraged to bring picnic rugs and parapluis to enjoy the baguettes, chocolate tarts, Laurent Perriet champagne and French beer on offer.
This year Hindi Zahra, Brigitte, Soviet Suprem and Lou Doillon are on the musical line up. Moroccan-born Hindi Zahra has been described as a North-African Patti Smith with her folksy-blues. The self-taught multi-instrumentalist sings in English and her native Orsoul. Brigitte, a music duo made up of Aurélie Saada and Sylvie Hoarau, pay homage to the 70s divas with lounge-pop and retro-folk.
Also on the line up is Balkan electro collective Soviet Suprem, who throw together Bolshoi gypsy beats, hip hop and unconventional cool. Finally Lou Doillon, daughter of Jane Birkin and sister of singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, promised the So Frenchy So Chic team that she’d come to Australia two years ago, but unfortunately had to cancel due to family tragedy. Now she returns, and her latest LP, Lay Low showcases a richer sound than her earlier acoustic take.
