SNP to oppose royal approval of Brexit Bill in protest that drags Queen into row

Ian Blackford will attempt to stage a protest at the Queen’s Privy Council meeting to approve the Brexit Bill.

The SNP Westminster leader has made a formal request to attend the next meeting of the Queen’s political advisers to oppose Royal approval of the EU Withdrawal Bill.

The attempt to drag the Queen back into the Brexit row could mean that the British monarch will avoid attending the meeting.

Blackford, a member of the Privy Council, has written to Lord President Jacob Rees-Mogg.

He warned that the granting of royal assent without the legislative consent of the Scottish Parliament, Sennedd, and the Northern Ireland Assembly, would “represent a serious breach of the letter and spirit of the Sewel Convention, which has underpinned devolution on these islands for the past 20 years”.
