SNP say Boris Johnson's judgement is 'on the line' as calls grow for him to sack Dominic Cummings

Boris Johnson's judgement is "on the line" according to the SNP, who have said the Prime Minister must sack his most senior aide over multiple breaches of lockdown.

Revelations in the Mirror newspaper suggest Dominic Cummings travelled over 250 miles between London and Durham to self-isolate after his wife fell ill with coronavirus.

Cummings has repeatedly claimed he is innocent of wrongdoing, insisting that he travelled in order to ensure appropriate childcare.

However, political opponents and figures inside the Conservative party have pointed to parents across the country who were ill and did not know self-isolating somewhere other than at home was allowed.

Ian Blackford, who leads the SNP at Westminster, has lodged a Parliamentary motion calling for Dominic Cummings to be removed from post, and has also posed a series of Written Parliamentary Questions seeking answers on the controversy.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said: "Boris Johnson must sack Dominic Cummings. If he doesn't this will go on for many weeks and cause lasting damage to public confidence in the Tory government and its Covid-19 response.

"The Prime Minister's judgement is on now the line - he must stop treating the public as fools. There cannot be one rule for Tory advisers and another for everyone else. Dominic Cummings broke the rules and he is now threatening public health. He must go without further delay.

"Public anger is palpable. MPs are receiving hundreds of emails from their constituents and hundreds of thousands have signed a petition calling for Mr Cummings to go. The police have launched an investigation. This is not going away - however much Boris Johnson arrogantly dismisses the widespread public concern.

"The SNP has written to Sir Mark Sedwill calling for an inquiry and tabled a Parliamentary motion demanding Mr Cummings resignation. We have also submitted a series of Parliamentary questions to put on record exactly what role Boris Johnson played in the Downing Street cover-up, which kept the public in the dark for eight weeks.

"Tomorrow we will hold a cross-party meeting for MPs to discuss the joint actions we can take to hold Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings to account.

"The longer the Prime Minister allows this farce to continue the more the Tory government will lose credibility and respect. He must sack Mr Cummings without further delay."

Downing Street have also announced that Cummings will give a rare address on Monday, as well as taking questions from the press.

However, Blackford tweeted : “This should be a resignation statement not a PR exercise. It is about taking responsibility.

“When Catherine Calderwood apologised she recognised it wasn’t enough and resigned to protect confidence in the public health message. That is also what the Conservative Party demanded.”
