SNP's Martin Docherty "hopefully optimistic" as counting continues in West Dunbartonshire

The SNP’s Martin Docherty is “hopefully optimistic” of retaining his seat in west Dunbartonshire.

Counting is now well underway at Clydebank Leisure Centre with postal votes and boxes from 81 polling stations being sifted through.

Speaking to the Lennox Herald, the SNP candidate, who has represented the constituency since 2015, said: “We are hopefully optimistic from the sampling we are seeing so far that those who didn’t come out in 2017 have come out this time.”

“It’s been a really good day. The campaign has been really positive. What we are seeing is that people are becoming more eager to get back out to the polling stations.”

Reflecting on the exit poll, which predicts a strong Tory majority, he said: “It’s also looking like a landslide for the SNP but we will have to see what happens.”

Conservative candidate Alix Mathieson said she was pleased by the exit poll prediction and was “excited” to see what the night brings.

She said: “I’m feeling excited - we’ve had a really good day. I’ve been to a few stations and the turn out seems to have been good.

“It’s encouraging that more people are coming out to vote.

“It’s great that we are looking to get a decent majority overall but when it comes to Scotland it’s a bit trickier.”
