SNP's Joanna Cherry and Angus Robertson go head to head for Edinburgh seat

Two of the SNP's most prominent politicians will go head to head as they both aim to become the party's candidate in the Edinburgh Central seat.

Joanna Cherry and Angus Robertson have confirmed they are both running to be the SNP candidate in Ruth Davidson's seat.

The former Scottish Conservative leader is expected to step down, making it a key target for the SNP at the next Scottish Parliament elections.

Robertson announced his bid for the seat earlier this week, saying he would be a "full time" MSP. He was the SNP's Westminster leader between 2007 and 2017.

Cherry, who is currently the MP for Edinburgh South West, confirmed her run at the weekend and said she would quit her seat at Westminster if she wins.

It means party members will decide who becomes the SNP candidate for Edinburgh Central, which has a slim Tory majority of 610.

Cheery said: "I am very grateful to all the people who approached me and encouraged me to put my hat in the ring when nominations open.

"Scotland must have the right to escape Boris Johnson's Brexit; we must have the right to choose our own future and we need a strategy to get us to that point of decision."

She added: "The movement for Scotland to be an independent European nation can only be realised from Holyrood and I want to offer my services where I think they can be of most use.

"I look forward to a forthcoming referendum on Scottish independence, SNP MPs at Westminster have never been there to settle down; I am for settling up.

"I choose Scotland and hope to be able to be able to play my part as we create a modern independent state."

Cherry has been tipped by many as a potential future leader of the party.

The Queen's Counsel lawyer has admitted she is not Sturgeon's "best mate" and has hailed Alex Salmond as the party's greatest ever leader.

However she has praised the First Minister as a "very strong effective leader."
