SNP receive just £4,000 of donations in first three months of year

The SNP has received just £4,000 of donations in the first three months of the years, according to figures from the electoral commission.

The money all came from one donor and was received before Nicola Sturgeon resigned.

Scottish Labour and the Scottish Lib Dems received donations of more than £200,000.

This comes as the SNP's finances are being investigated by police over £600k of money ringfenced for an independence referendum.

Former chief executive Peter Murrell, who is married to Nicola Sturgeon, and former treasurer Colin Beattie have both been arrested and released pending further investigation.

Humza Yousaf said after First Minister's Questions on Thursday that he was not worried about the lack of donations with a general election coming up.

He said: "We’ve got 75,000 members or thereabouts... the largest mass membership organisation of any political party in Scotland. On top of that what I’d say is we rely on our huge membership base as opposed to big massive donors.

"Look, I’m very confident of not just fighting that General Election but doing very well in that General Election."

The one donation of £4,000 came from James Murdoch from Strathearn. The SNP only received one donation in the same time period last year, but it was much larger.

William Ritchie left the party £91,996 in his will. The SNP also received £287,339 in public funding.

Scottish Labour and the Lib Dems received £200,000 each from gas generator manufacturer Peak Scientific. The company's headquarters are in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire and its contribution made up the bulk of both parties donations.
