SNP recapture East Renfrewshire seat lost to Conservative Party two years ago

Thursday was a historic night for East Renfrewshire with the re-election of a SNP MP into power.

Former MP for the area, Kirsten Oswald, reclaimed her seat – lost in 2017 – with a majority of more than 5400 votes.

The move marks the end of Paul Masterton’s two-year reign in the region, after Ms Oswald secured 24,877 votes.

Conservative Mr Masterton came second with 19,451 votes in the region that covers Eaglesham and Waterfoot – News readership areas.

It was evident early on in the day that change was afoot in the seat.

Labour candidate Carolann Davidson picked up 6855 votes, whilst Andrew McGlynn – Lib Dem – receiving 4174 votes.

East Renfrewshire chief executive and returning officer, Lorraine McMillan, announced the winner at just after 3am at Williamwood High in Clarkston.

In total 77 per cent (55,357) of those registered to vote in the area did so.
