SNP raise safety concerns over council's plan to sell adverts on roundabouts

Advertising boards on roundabouts could be a danger to drivers, councillors have claimed.

North Ayrshire Council plans to sell adverts on the road islands to make cash.

SNP councillors called in the decision at an Audit and Scrutiny Committee meeting last week.

Councillor Tony Gurney said: “The last thing a driver needs when they are getting to a roundabout is something to distract them.”

The council aims to make £20,000 from the new venture but Councillor Gurney said he was worried about potential accidents.

He said: “Given the safety implications I think it is not enough return to take those risks. ”

The call-in, which was signed by Councillors Gurney, Christina Larsen, and Joy Brahim, was rejected by the Audit and Scrutiny Committee.

The decision means officials can carry with plans to test the market for advertising on some of the council’s 26 roundabouts.

The call-in also raised concerns about the potential future expansion of advertising into schools.

And it voiced issues with the “use of resources and staff for such relatively small and long term potential income gain at this particular point in time.”

Dundee and Renfrewshire run similar schemes.

A North Ayrshire council document said there is no evidence to suggest an increase in road safety issues sparked by placards on roundabouts.

A council report said the Roads Service would be consulted about any proposals.
And efforts would be made to ensure the boards are placed in locations, which don’t cause problems for motorists.
All agreements made with advertisers will include a statement that the council would still carry out its statutory duties with impartiality regardless of deals with firms.
