SNP MPs angrily deny 'disrespecting' military by 'drinking heavily' on Armistice visit

Two senior SNP MPs have angrily denied accusations that they were “disrespecting” the military by “drinking heavily” on an Armistice visit to Gibraltar.

Nationalist frontbenchers Drew Hendry MP and David Linden MP have been accused by Tory Defence Secretary Ben Wallace of having “put military personnel in a difficult position” by their behaviour.

The two were part of a group of 15 MPs visiting Gibraltar for a three-day Armistice Day visit this week by an all-party group of MPs.

According to reports in the Times newspaper the two SNP MPs and a Labour MP took full advantage of lounge facilities before take-off.

Wallace is reported to be writing to Labour and the SNP to express his “disappointment” about the behaviour of three MPs.

But the SNP MPs hit back that they are part of a “bizarre Tory smear” to distract from the sleaze allegations engulfing Boris Johnson’s government.

An SNP spokesman said: “These suggestions are false. Drew Hendry MP and David Linden MP were honoured to be invited to this important event and attended all engagements, including the welcome meeting and dinner shortly after landing.

“Instead of trying to divert attention from the Tory corruption scandal engulfing Westminster, Ben Wallace should be apologising for his role in it, including voting to get Owen Paterson off the hook.”
