Muppets character Fozzie Bear should be sent to solve the UK’s energy crisis, an SNP MP has suggested after Boris Johnson invoked Kermit the Frog as a solution to the climate change emergency.
Pete Wishart MP said the famous Muppet characters should be recruited by the Tory government after the Prime Minister humiliated himself with a reference to Kermit in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
Johnson quoted Kermit’s trademark song ‘It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green’ in a bizarre riff as he implored the world to help tackle climate change ahead of the Cop26 summit in Glasgow.
As he deplored Kermit’s treatment of Miss Piggy, another Muppet character, Johnson insisted to bemused world leaders that it was “easy, lucrative and right” to be green during his address to the UN.
Johnson told his New York audience: “We must show that we are capable of learning and maturing and finally taking responsibility for the destruction we are inflicting, not just upon our planet, but upon ourselves. It’s time for humanity to grow up.”
As well as being widely lampooned on social media Johnson was ridiculed in the Commons by the veteran SNP MP for Perthshire.
During the Commons Business statement, Wishart told MPs: “We’ve got the Prime Minister telling us all to grow up as he quotes Kermit The Frog.”
“Maybe he should have got Kermit the Frog to negotiate a trade deal with the Americans while he was there, maybe we could even have got Fozzie Bear to solve the energy crisis.’
Wishart said of the Tory government: “How dare anybody even start to refer to them as a bunch of muppets.”
