SNP MP recalls horrific racist abuse she received online about being told to 'f*** off home'

A SNP MP has revealed some of the horrific racist abuse she has received online since getting into politics.

Anum Qaisar-Javed, the new MP for Airdrie and Shotts, gave the House of Commons a graphic account of the hate mail she receives.

During her speech in the chamber Qaisar-Javed called on Boris Johnson 's government to take action on online abuse.

It comes after three English players who missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday received racist abuse on Twitter and Instagram.

She said: "On social media I've been told that I shouldn't be involved in politics because I'm 'not a Brit, I'm a P***'.

"That is of course wrong on both accounts, I'm neither a Brit or a P***, I'm a proud Scot.

"On social media I've also been told to 'f*** off home', that of course doesn't make sense. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland is my home.

"'I'm not unique, however in any sense and we saw less with the racial horrific abuse that black England players received on social media.

"Every day people are racially abused online because of a false narrative, built upon prejudice and assumptions, one that ministers in this government have encouraged I'm afraid to say.

"Yesterday the Prime Minister admitted that there's a systematic issue of racism, particularly on social media. The house may be united against racism, but we need to see real action. What does the government intend to do about this?"

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Commons leader, said he was appalled that the SNP MP had been abused.

He said: "There is a fundamental equality, every British citizen is honourable, justified and placed before the law in the same position as every other one. The whole House is outraged about how she has been treated. "

The Tory Minister added that the Prime Minister has had discussions with social media companies about policing online abuse or face legal action to do so.

Rees-Mogg added: "Social media is sewer, unfortunately a sewer that is in need of cleansing."
