SNP MP challenges Prime Minister to back paid Miscarriage Leave Bill

Calls have been made for a change in the law to ensure those who experience a miscarriage are given at least three days paid leave.

SNP MP Angela Crawley has asked Boris Johnson to back her bill after warning the Prime Minister during Question Time that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage - leading to deeply traumatic experiences.

The Lanark & Hamilton East MP stated that, under the current rules, many have to resort to taking sick pay or unpaid leave after experiencing this loss rather than receiving formal miscarriage leave.

Ms Crawley's Paid Miscarriage Leave Bill - brought before Parliament last month - seeks to ensure parents get the time they deserve to grieve and process a miscarriage without worrying about finances.

The MP told Lanarkshire Live : "One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, meaning thousands of parents around the UK are suffering without the proper support in place.

"As it stands under the current rules, the only route for parents to take time to properly process and grieve their loss is by requesting compassionate leave or taking annual or unpaid leave - which isn't always guaranteed.

"My bill looks to follow New Zealand's lead by bringing in three days of paid leave for anyone who has suffered a miscarriage in the UK, no matter what stage a loss of pregnancy occurs.

"The SNP Scottish Government is committed to introducing three days of paid miscarriage leave within the public sector in Scotland, however, the power to make this change lies solely with the UK government.

"Parents must not be made to wait for Westminster to act any longer.

"The grief being experienced by parents is not an illness and parents should receive formal miscarriage leave rather than having to resort to sick pay or unpaid leave.

“I wrote to the Prime Minister on this very issue in May this year and I urge him once again to heed the calls and back my bill to bring forward this crucial support without any further delay."
