SNP government accused of complacency over its response to rising Covid cases in Scotland

The Scottish Government has been accused of complacency over its response to the rising cases of coronavirus in Scotland.

Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour's deputy leader and shadow secretary for covid recovery, said Nicola Sturgeon's SNP government has been "too slow" and has called on the vaccination programme to be ramped up.

It comes as Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for the Holyrood parliament to be recalled to allow MSPs to discuss the response to the rising cases across the country.

The latest Scottish Government figures show that 2,726 tested positive for the deadly virus over the last 24 hours.

It has also been revealed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that Scotland had six of Europe's top 10 covid hot spots last week.

All of Scotland's local authorities are expected to move to Level 0 on July 19, with so-called 'Freedom Day' expected to be on August 9.

Speaking on the BBC's Good Morning Scotland show, Jackie Baillie said: "The Scottish Government's response, in light of really spiralling numbers of covid positive cases, has in our view been far too slow, they've appeared to be a little complacent.

"We think the situation is sufficiently concerning for a recall of parliament, because that would discuss what needs to be done - focus minds.

"It is the case that we do need to be cautious because people have worked so hard to get to the stage we're at.

"We want to be able to ease restrictions, but the best way of doing that is to accelerate vaccinations and to have a robust test and trace system.

"If you've looked at the case numbers they've gone up exponentially, we're talking 1000s upon 1000s every day.

"Whilst it is so good that people are not ending up in hospital, and fewer people are dying as a consequence of it is the case that one in seven people can get long covid and that's a really debilitating condition

"We need to control this and the way to do it is to ramp up vaccinations."

Earlier Sarwar called for the parliament to be recalled to allow the government to focus on the pandemic.

He said: "Five weeks ago, before this recent spike took hold, Scottish Labour called for walk-in vaccination centres to become the norm – but ministers dawdled and now our exit from the pandemic rests on a knife edge.

“Right now we should be ramping up efforts to contain the virus, but instead the SNP cut corners on Test and Protect and let the vaccine rollout stall.

“Parliament needs to be recalled urgently so ministers can answer questions on this growing crisis.”

It comes as Health Secretary Humza Yousaf urged Scots to consider using walk-in centres - which will be open in every mainland region of Scotland from today - if they are not yet fully vaccinated.

"People can attend for their first dose, or if eight weeks have passed since their first, they can go along and get their second dose," Yousaf said.

"You can find out where your nearest drop-in clinics are by visiting NHS Inform which will direct you to the latest information from your local health board - or through your local board's social media channels.

"Our route out of this pandemic is getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, that is why I am urging people to get jagged in July."
