SNP equality chief hounded by cybernats over Kezia Dugdale court support

The SNP’s equality chief was targeted by cybernats after backing Kezia Dugdale’s court victory.

Fiona Robertson was branded a “quisling”, “clown” and “mad cow” by angry nationalists for praising the former Scottish Labour leader.

The development came one day after Sheriff Nigel Ross made a plea for decency in political debate after dismissing the defamation case brought by pro-independence blogger Stuart Campbell.

The Bath-based former video games journalist sued for £25,000 damages after Dugdale suggested he was anti-gay for joking about Scottish Secretary David Mundell’s son.

Campbell, 51, said Tory MSP Oliver Mundell was the “sort of public speaker that makes you wish his dad had embraced his homosexuality sooner”.

Dugdale, 37, later wrote a Record column attacking “someone who spouts homophobia”.

But Sheriff Ross ruled on Wednesday that the 2017 article was protected by the principle of “fair comment” despite her claims being “incorrect”.

In response to the judgement, Robertson tweeted: “Many thanks to you for fighting this case, Kezia – I’m sorry you had to go through it at all, but your testimony was powerful and vital. I hope you can get some peace now.”

But Robertson, the SNP’s women’s and equalities convenor, was inundated with abuse accusing her of damaging the independence movement.

One Twitter user posted: “This is the same mad cow that resulted in me leaving SNP.”

Another added: “Think you are in the wrong party luv, it’s Labour you’re wanting doll, nae the SNP.” A further message read: “Sadly she’s not the only pseudo Indy, self interests first quisling in the SNP.”

Robertson was also described as “f****** clown” and “patronising” for “backing an SNP hater” in other messages.

There were also calls for her to lose her post.

Responding to the criticism, Robertson later said Dugdale’s testimony had been important in highlighting “‘casual’ homophobia” as opposed to “frothing-at-the mouth” bigotry.

Dugdale last night said: “The ruling provides a chance to reset the tone of public debate, particularly online and we should take it.

“I’m sorry that Fiona Robertson has had to put up with on-line abuse, again for simply expressing her fair and honestly held views.”

Scottish Tory equalities spokeswoman Annie Wells said: “Once again we are seeing the deep and deplorable divisions within the SNP.

“The reaction from these individuals is pathetic, and deserves to be condemned by all within the SNP.”
