SNP councillor urges Scotland to "take control of country" in independence rally with Tommy Sheridan

An SNP councillor urged people not to wait for an independence referendum but to “take control of this country now," writes Edwin Lawrence.

South Ayrshire’s Ian Cochrane made his controversial statement at the Hope Over Fear rally in Glasgow on Sunday.

The Prestwick councillor shared a stage with Tommy Sheridan at the George Square event.

Councillor Cochrane was billed as one of seven speakers at the rally.

He ended his speech by telling the gathering: “We have an opportunity here.

“The establishment is on its knees.

“We don’t wait for a referendum. We take control of this country now.”

The rally attracted independence supporters from across Scotland (Daily Record)

The Ayrshire Post tried to contact Councillor Cochrane to ask how he proposed to “take control” of Scotland and if he favoured UDI - a unilateral declaration of independence.

He did not return our call to explain a position which is at variance with mainstream SNP policy.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon declined an invitation to speak at Hope Over Fear.

Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail are named as directors of Hope Over Fear Ltd.
