SNP councillor and his wife battered in New Year party pub attack

An SNP councillor and his wife were left with head and facial injuries after a “shocking” disturbance at a pub’s New Year bash.

Greg Lennon – North Lanarkshire Council’s SNP group secretary and councillor for Gartcosh, Glenboig and Moodiesburn – was taken to hospital, along with his wife Tracy, after the attack.

Onlookers said Lennon, 41, and Tracy, 40, were attacked by multiple people during an incident at the Big Shop pub in Glenboig, Lanarkshire, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The pub, on the town’s Main Street, had been hosting a ticketed Hogmanay party from 9pm and had laid on fireworks, food and a DJ.

But police were called at about 2.30am when a row broke out.

The couple were taken to University Hospital Monklands, near Airdrie, for treatment to injuries.

One onlooker said the Lennons were involved in a disturbance with at least three people.

Our source said: “It was shocking to see. I hope Greg is OK, and his wife also.”

No one had yet been charged in connection with the incident when Police Scotland were contacted by the Record yesterday.

A spokesman said: “Police in Coatbridge are investigating after a 41-year-old male and a 40-year-old woman were found with head and facial injuries following a report of a disturbance in Main Street, Glenboig.

“Both were taken to University Hospital Monklands for treatment and inquiries are ongoing.”

It’s understood statements were taken from witnesses who saw the incident on New Year’s Day.

Lennon was elected to North Lanarkshire Council in May 2017 and said there was a “real positivity and aspiration” for the newly created ward.

He added: “I think the work that we’ll do over the next five years will be instrumental in bettering the communities of Gartcosh, Glenboig and Moodiesburn in the future.”

The Record contacted the Lennons yesterday but they said they were not yet in a position to comment.

Our reporter also requested to speak to a manager at the Big Shop but received no response.

The SNP group on North Lanarkshire council could not be contacted for comment.
