SNP claim Boris Johnson hid 'power grab' plans from Scottish government

Boris Johnson hid controversial Brexit "power grab" plans and potential food shortages from Nicola Sturgeon as he prepared legislation to replace EU rules, it has been claimed.

The SNP called betrayal after leaked Brexit planning documents revealed how UK Government hid plans to take control of EU powers over devolved administrations.

Key lines in papers leaked to the Guido Fawkes website appear to show how the UK government would assume control of state aid which the SNP government say should come to Edinburgh were withheld.

Cabinet ministers were warned plans to revoke EU laws for the UK government to assume control of state aid throughout the UK "should not be shared publicly or with the devolved administrations at this stage".

Another document on the food supply, which warned of "a tightening of supply" and "reduced supply availability, especially of certain fresh products" from Brexit also stated: "Food is a devolved policy area. We have not shared this assumption with DA (Devolved Administrations) as per handling instructions, but it will have an impact on DAs and their planning."

The details were spelled out when the controversial Internal Market bill was published in September amid a growing row and threats by Tory ministers that they would break international laws over Brexit.

Kirsten Oswald, the SNP deputy Westminster leader, said the papers showed the Tory government :cannot be trusted".

She said : "These leaked documents prove that the Tory government deliberately hid crucial information about its extreme Brexit plans – including the likelihood of food shortages – from the devolved nations, as well as details about the Tory power grab on the Scottish Parliament.

"It demonstrates, yet again, that the Tories cannot be trusted to act in Scotland’s interests – or even tell the truth. We already knew they were willing to break international law, and this shows they have attempted to disguise their plans to impose an extreme Brexit against Scotland’s will."
