Snowfall causes day of widespread disruption across the North East

The first significant snowfall of the year caused chaotic travel disruption in some areas of the region.

There were huge delays across Newcastle, County Durham and Northumberland as the North East woke up to a blanket of snow on Monday morning.

The treacherous conditions caused mayhem on roads in Consett where a bus became stuck and on the A1(M) in Bowburn where four lorries got stranded.

Public transport was also been hugely affected, with many bus routes either diverted, delayed or completely cancelled.

One school in Newcastle was forced to close as well as four in Gateshead. Meanwhile, more than 150 schools were forced to close in County Durham, however, they all planned to reopen on Tuesday.

Fifteen schools across Northumberland were also closed.

The Met Office said wintry showers would continue to hit the region overnight and could continue into Tuesday, especially across the Pennines.

Later in the week, a mix of sunny spells and snow showers are expected and could lead to more persistent snowfall.

Despite the snowy showers mostly being focused across hills in Scotland and the north of England, Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: “However, later on Tuesday and early Wednesday, don’t be surprised to see some snow falling even in Wales and the south, although again most of any lying snow will be over hills.”

A yellow weather warning for ice remained in place on Monday evening with icy patches causing hazardous conditions.

Dan Suri, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: “This low-pressure system will bring a lot of moisture into contact with the relatively cold air across the northern half of the UK.

"This brings wintry conditions to an extending from East Yorkshire to North Lancashire across into Northern Ireland and northwards Scotland.”
