Fresh from his controversial front-page splash on how Russia and China have “cracked open the files stolen by Edward Snowden”, Tom Harper of the Sunday Times told CNN: “We just publish what we believe to be the position of the British government …”

The rest of the interview was not much better for the home affairs correspondent of the Sunday Times.

The last answer says a lot. “Intelligence is a very difficult nut to crack,” says Harper, “unless you’re dealing with leaked documents”.
