Snow warning for Leeds as Met Office say people will be 'cut off' in days

An urgent warning for snow has been issued with travel delays and a chance communities will be entirely cut off.

The Met Office has announced the yellow weather warning for large swaithes of the UK, including Yorkshire.

Heavy snow is expected across northern England, hitting Yorkshire hardest on Tuesday between 11am and midnight.

The weather will be made worse on Tuesday by strong winds battering the county, with frost, rain and snow spreading east.

The Met Office states there will be:

  • Possible travel delays on roads, stranding vehicles and passengers

  • Possible delays and cancellations to rail and air travel

  • A slight chance that rural communities could become cut off

  • A small chance of power cuts and mobile phone coverage could be affected

Here is the weather forecast from today until Thursday

Cloudy start with outbreaks of rain easing and any snow confined to highest hills. Further showers are then expected to spread inland from the North Sea, but most western areas drier through the afternoon, with bright or sunny spells. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Tonight

Rather cloudy evening, with limited clear spells but most parts dry. Chance of frost. Cloud thickens from the west through the early hours, with rain and stronger winds by dawn. Minimum temperature 1 °C.

Monday

Rain spreading east, persistent and heavy for a time, with strong gusty winds and hill snow. Clearing early afternoon to sunny spells and blustery showers, wintry across hills. Cold. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday

Frosty start Tuesday. Turning very windy, with rain and snow spreading east. Snow becoming confined to hills later. Winds easing Wednesday and Thursday but showers or more prolonged rain likely.
