Snow to hit Scotland this week as Arctic temperatures bring spring scorcher to an end

Scots have been warned to pack away their sun hats and barbecues as the scorching Spring weather is to be replaced with snow and plummeting temperatures.

A flurry of wintry weather will be move in across parts of the country, making a stark change from the sizzling heat most of us have enjoyed recently.

The temperature is set to drop to -7C in parts of Scotland and the weather will start to turn colder from today.

Some areas will struggle to hit 8C, with Wednesday seeing the most extreme of the wintry weather.

Other areas will be even colder on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures plunging to below freezing.

The forecasters predict Glasgow will be hit with 6cm of snow on Wednesday, while the east coast may also see a smattering of the white stuff.

Parts of the north east could up to 9cm of snow towards the end of this week.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office forecaster, told the PA news agency: “Wednesday will be the most extreme in terms of wintry weather, as a cold stream of air will start to push southwards bringing unpredictable wet and windy conditions, even snow or sleet.

“It will be markedly colder than what we’ve just seen, daytime temperatures falling by half, and some areas will even struggle to hit 8C (46.4F), which will signify the biggest change in conditions.

“Overnight into Thursday and Friday, many areas will fall considerably lower than freezing, towards minus 4C (24.8F) and minus 5C (23F).

“It looks like most places will be impacted, parts of northern England, northern Wales and central England are expected to be the worst affected.

“This wintry weather could even push into southern areas of England and Wales, which isn’t unusual, it is normal to have colder weather in April, but it’s far from the sunny, warm days seen last week.”

It comes after Glasgow was marked as hotter than Barcelona over the weekend - delighting sun-worshippers who hit parks and beer gardens to soak up what seems to be the last of the warmth for at least the next while.

Met Office forecaster Jonathan Vautrey added: "Snow could come on Wednesday evening or Thursday, especially in areas such as the Pennines.

"Overnight into Wednesday and Thursday, many areas will fall considerably lower than freezing, towards -6C."
