Snow starts to fall across Scotland as road chiefs urge caution

Roads bosses have warned Scots drivers to be cautious as snow starts to fall.

The Met Office have issued an amber warning for snow until 8am tomorrow around areas of the central belt and further yellow warnings for snow and ice in the country.

Forecasters expect 12 inches to fall in some parts with Lothian, Borders, Strathclyde and parts of south west Scotland will seeing the worst of the conditions before the warning lifts at 8am tomorrow morning.

Around 10cm will blanket the majority of these areas but the snowfall could rise to as high as 30cm on higher ground.

With the snow now falling roads bosses have warned people to be careful when driving.

Traffic Scotland advised motorists to check the forecast before setting out, tweeting pictures of snow covered routes.

They tweeted: "Starting to see snow falling on the trunk network especially on the #A68, #A7 and some on the #A720."

Bear SE Trunk Roads tweeted a picture of a gritter clearing the white stuff from a major route.

They tweeted: "A1 Haddington - Echelon ploughing being undertaken at the location. Conditions are poor but the operatives are working hard to improve this.

"Please give them space, drive carefully and to the conditions."

A forecast from the Met Office reads: “5-10cm of snow is likely to accumulate across most of the warning area, with 10-20cm above 200m elevation and perhaps around 30cm above 400m.”

Two yellow weather warnings remain in place for southern and northern parts of Scotland as snow is expected to continue into the rest of the week.

Wintry conditions could turn into blizzards in the north east of Scotland as gusts from Storm Christoph travels up from England.
