Snow Northern Ireland: Weather warning issued as temperatures to plummet

Northern Ireland is bracing itself for a cold snap which could see snow showers and temperatures dropping to as low as minus 9.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place for across Northern Ireland with snow and ice forecast.

The Met Office has warned travel may be affected as conditions worsen.

The weather warning is in place from 9pm tonight, March 6 until 10am tomorrow, March 7.

The Met Office said: "Snow and hail showers will affect parts of Northern Ireland late Monday onwards into Tuesday. Many areas will see little or no accumulations of snow, but 1 to 2 cm could settle in some spots, most likely over higher ground and over northern parts of Northern Ireland. Additionally, icy stretches are expected on untreated surfaces.

Met Eireann also has yellow weather warning in place for Monday, with hazardous conditions due to freezing temperatures expected.

Snow could blanket parts of Ireland within days as a major cold blast moves in.

Met Eireann has issued a 16-hour weather warning for Ice that comes into effect at 6pm on Monday.

The Republic's nationwide Status Yellow alert lasts until Tuesday and 10am and reads: “Hazardous conditions due to freezing temperatures including icy stretches on roads and paths.

Next week, the mercury is due to plummet below zero as freezing Arctic air sinks southwards.

A forecaster said: “It will be very cold until at least Thursday with frost, ice and some possible wintry falls.”
