Snow is falling across Wales today ahead of a major dip in temperatures

Snow is set to fall across parts of Wales on Thursday, February 20 ahead of a significant dip in temperatures.

Following rounds of rain associated with storms in the North Atlantic, a sharp cold front is set to move across the UK this afternoon.

As these systems cross over Wales, precipitation is likely to transition to snow, BBC senior forecaster Derek Brockway said.

Radar images show snow already falling across parts of Snowdonia National Park and the hills in north and central Wales.

But it's possible for blustery showers to transition to hail and sleet at lower levels as the day goes on.

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Wiillington said: “Some of the rain, especially in the warning areas, could be quite heavy, with showers of hail and thunder possible between."

A yellow weather warning for rain remains in place for two areas of Wales - one in the north west from Colwyn Bay to near Aberystwyth and one in South Wales, including Cardiff and Swansea - until 2pm.

Residents in these areas could receive as many a 70-100mm of rain by the time showers come to an end.

Behind the bands of rain, cold air will grip the country, sending temperatures into the low single digits on Thursday night.

Much of South Wales, including Cardiff, Newport and Swansea will feel like 1C, according to the Met Office.

Areas along the coast may feel even colder, with some places expected to feel like -1C.

But a reprieve from the bitter air will arrive by the weekend.

On Friday, the mercury is set to climb to around 7C around the coasts and as high as 10C for inland areas.

Saturday and Sunday will feature similar temperatures, though rain and strong winds are set to return.
