Snow, ice and heavy rain to hit North East as two fresh weather warnings issued

The North East is set to be hit by more snow and ice as well as heavy rain after two weather warnings were issued.

The Met Office will put a yellow warning for ice and snow in force in western parts of County Durham and Northumberland from 10pm on Wednesday to 10am on Thursday.

There will also be a warning for rain in force for the same parts of the region between midday on Friday and 9am on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Wintry showers are expected to continue through Wednesday night into Thursday morning, especially over Northern Ireland and western Scotland, before developing more widely across parts of northern England, the north Midlands and north Wales later in the night.

"This will leave surfaces wet, leading to icy stretches developing on untreated surfaces.

Showers will fall as a mixture of hail, sleet and snow. Some places are likely to see one to 3cm of snow, mainly above 100m, with five to 10cm possible above 400m.

"Spells of heavy rain are likely to affect parts of Wales and northern England during the second half of Friday through to Saturday morning.

"Some 15-30 mm of rain is likely quite widely in the areas covered by the warning, with 40-60 mm possible on the highest ground.

"The heaviest rain is most likely on Friday night before clearing eastwards on Saturday morning."

Anyone travelling on Wednesday night and Thursday have been urged to take care due to potential icy patches on the roads.

On Friday and Saturday, there could be possible delays to bus and train services as well as disruption on the roads caused by potential flooding.
