SNOW forecast for Edinburgh and the Lothians tonight according to Met Office

Parts of Edinburgh and the Lothians could be hit by snow tonight, according to the Met Office.

We might have arrived in April but that certainly doesn't mean the winter weather is behind us – this is Scotland, after all.

Penicuik is among the areas set to be affected through the night and into tomorrow morning. Snow showers, which could turn to sleet, are expected to start at around 1am and could continue through until 10am.

The Met Office say that those living in the Lothian and Borders area can expect a cloudy night tonight with rain spreading from the east. Snow could fall "to quite low levels" after midnight with temperatures around freezing.

Tomorrow they reckon it will be "cloudy with rain spreading west in the morning, preceded by snow on high ground, and locally strong northerly winds".

However the snow forecast isn't expected to be heavy enough to cause any disruption, so no weather warnings have been issued.

Rain is forecast to fall across most of the UK with showers likely to be heavy and blustery at times.

A spokesperson for the Weather Channel told The Mirror: "Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of the current spell.

"Patches of sleet and light snow could fall at lower levels in the morning.

"Otherwise it will be cloudy with widespread showers, some heavy."
