Snow forecast for Dinner Plain, near Mount Hotham, as search for man missing from ski resort continues

Victoria Police say the search for a man missing in Victoria's alpine region will continue into the night, when temperatures are expected plunge towards zero.

More than 140 emergency workers are trying to find a 70-year-old man called Christos, who went missing from Dinner Plain on Friday afternoon.

He was last seen on Big Muster Drive at about 2:45pm on Friday.

Christos told his wife he was going out for a walk to spot emus and did not return.

Victoria Police Inspector Paul Hargreaves said today's search, supported by Parks Victoria, the State Emergency Service and Bush Search and Rescue, included track and off-track areas.

"We are going to do everything we possibly can to try and find him," he said.

He said the search would be scaled back to mobile patrols during the night.

Beams of light will be pointed into the bush to act as a guide and alarms and sirens will be sounded.

Inspector Hargreaves said police were concerned about temperatures dropping through the night.

Inspector Hargreaves said snow was expected later today and tomorrow, which could complicate the search.

SES commander Dan Walton said the conditions were "incredibly tricky" to search in, particularly as the ground was wet and slippery after rainfall.

"It's hard work for the members out there," he said.

"It's really easy to get turned around and perhaps even walk in circles."

Children 'devastated'

Christos's four children released a statement via Victoria Police thanking the community and emergency service workers for their help with the search.

They say they are "devastated" he is missing.

"Our dad is a kind and loving person, a lover of nature with an adventurous spirit," the statement read.

"He is a grandfather to four beautiful granddaughters and we know he would love to see them again.

"He is adored by his children, wife, family and friends and everyone else who knows him.

Police seek witness

Earlier today, Inspector Hargreaves said police were keen to talk to a witness who told SES volunteers on Friday that they saw a man fitting Christos' description on a walking track near his accommodation.

"We believe he was around about a kilometre, maybe a little less, from the village at that time," Inspector Hargreaves said.

Inspector Hargreaves said the missing man was last seen wearing a long-sleeve top, jumper, pants and crocs.

Anyone with information is urged to contact triple-0 or Wangaratta police station on (03) 5723 0888.
