Snow forces drivers on M621 to abandon cars in middle of motorway with gritters nowhere to be seen

Cars have become stranded on the snow-covered M621 near Leeds, forcing drivers to abandon them there.

A video, taken from a motorway bridge in Churwell, showed a car's wheels spinning fruitlessly as it failed to move from the centre of the motorway.

Aimee Hawkins, who captured the video, said she had seen three or four other cars abandoned along the side of the M621 between the junction 1 turn off for B&Q and the M62.

She said: "Cars are stuck all the way up with no gritters or slow ploughs in sight.

"It’s the left hand side of the carriageway heading towards Birstall and the M62 [which is the worst].

"The Seat in the video had been stuck there for a while, there were also other cars abandoned on the hard shoulder further up the motorway."

Further up the M621, West Yorkshire Police have shut the entry slip road on the eastbound side at junction 7, after several vehicles became stranded on the roundabout there.

There is also hour long delays on the M62, on the approach to the M621 at Birstall, due to traffic moving slowly in the snow.
