Snow falls in North East as unseasonable weather continues

You could have been forgiven for thinking we were still in winter today as snow began to fall in the North East.

The unseasonable weather hit areas in Gateshead, County Durham and Sunderland on Wednesday.

Many were shocked as snow, hail and sleet fell - unusual for a May afternoon.

Footage captured by the BBC shows cars struggling on the icy roads in Rowlands Gill this afternoon.

And it looks like there's potential for more disruption.

The Met Office says that snow could fall again on Thursday as bitterly cold temperatures continue.

Lows of -4°C are expected overnight and we're set for a cold and frosty start.

Here is what the Met Office tells us to expect in the coming days:

Wednesday evening

"Showers easing from most areas this evening, but some may linger through the night, and may produce snow over the higher tops of the Pennines and Cheviots. Away from the showers clear skies leading to a sharp frost. Minimum temperature -4 °C."

Thursday

"A cold and frosty start, but then bright with sunny spells. Showers developing during the day, perhaps heavy with a risk of hail and thunder, and some hill snow. Chilly. Maximum temperature 11 °C."

Outlook for Friday to Sunday

"Further sunshine and scattered showers on Friday. Starting dry and bright Saturday, then windy with persistent rain later. Windy with heavy showers Sunday."
