Snow covers parts of Northumberland as low temperatures hit North East

Snow covered large parts of Northumberland on Monday as icy temperatures hit parts of the North East.

Images show a considerable amount of snow across fields and roads near Carrshield which fell as a result of the drop in temperatures on Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Gritters were also spotted working in the area to clear some of the roads.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning on Sunday for County Durham, Northumberland and Gateshead .

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Areas of rain and hill snow seem likely to affect many areas for a time, probably clearing by morning and allowing temperatures to dip more widely below zero.

The yellow weather warning was lifted at about 11am on Monday with higher temperatures forecast in the afternoon.

Today's full forecast:

Rather cold with some rain to start, with a risk of icy patches for a time and a little wet snow in higher ground.

Remaining rather cold but soon becoming drier, bright and breezy and remaining so through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 5C.
