Snow could fall in parts of the North East as Met Office warns temperatures will plummet

The North East is in for a wintry weekend.

Temperatures will plummet to as low as -1 °C overnight on Friday and it won't get much warmer.

Snow could even fall on higher ground in the region on Saturday.

There's also risk of rain showers throughout the weekend and strong wind, however there will be the odd sunny spell.

A spokesperson for the Met Office laid out what to expect:

Friday evening

"It will be a dry evening with clear spells. Overnight it will become increasingly cloudy as rain moves in from the west, possibly falling as snow over the higher ground. Minimum temperature -1 °C."

Saturday

"A windy day with showers, falling as snow over the higher ground, to start and continuing throughout the day.

"The evening will be drier with some long clear spells. Maximum temperature 4 °C."

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday

"Sunshine and showers Sunday with strong winds.

"Drier and clearer on Monday with sunshine, but still the risk of a shower. Dry Tuesday with sunny spells and winds easing."
