Snow and sleet forecast by Met Office as temperatures dive across Wales

The Met Office is predicting snow and sleet across Wales this week as temperatures drop to some of their lowest levels so far this year.

Cold polar maritime air that moved across the UK at midweek will keep temperatures low into the weekend, allowing for wintry weather to develop.

Met Office chief meteorologist Dan Suri said: “It’ll certainly feel more wintry this week, with colder weather bringing a risk of frost, ice and wintry showers."

Beginning on Thursday (December 3), frequent showers will merge into longer spells of rain throughout the day in Wales.

The wet weather will turn wintry with snow over the hills as temperatures fail to rise above 6C during the warmest part of the day.

Anyone heading outdoors will want to wrap up as some of the coldest air so far this winter envelops the country.

Overnight, conditions will worsen as the mercury drops to 0C and spells of rain, which could turn wintry, continue. Hill snow is forecast to persist throughout the night.

By dawn on Friday, foggy patches and localised frost are possible.

Anyone venturing out in the early morning should be prepared for slippery spots and reduced visibility.

While the fog is forecast to lift later into the morning, the weather will only worsen as the day goes on.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Dan Harris said: "It’ll remain cold and unsettled on Friday as low pressure brings strong winds and spells of rain to many parts of the UK."

Outbreaks of sleet and hill snow are also predicted throughout Friday as the temperature lingers in the single digits at its highest point.

Mr Harris continued: “It’ll stay cold into the weekend with rain, showers and hill snow continuing across many areas, along with overnight frosts.

"We could also see some stubborn areas of freezing fog develop more widely, which at this time of year can persist all day.

"However, it's not all doom and gloom, as there’s likely to be an increased chance of dry, bright, and perhaps even sunny weather on offer as the weekend progresses.”
