Snow and ice warning as temperatures plummet to below freezing in Scotland

A yellow weathe r warning for snow and ice has been issued as temperatures in Scotland are set to plummet.

Drivers are being warned of difficult conditions overnight and into Thursday morning as freezing surfaces could lead to icy roads.

Heavy scattered showers will affect much of the east coast of Scotland this evening and overnight. This will lead to a risk of icy surfaces where any treatment is washed off, the Met Office reports.

Aberdeenshire and Moray will be most affected with wintry showers above 200m away from the coast, with 1-2cm of snow possible.

Other regions affected include Falkirk, Edinburgh , Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, East Lothian and Scottish Borders.

The yellow warning is in place for the rest of this evening (Wednesday) and into Thursday.

Walkers are warned to watch for any black ice patches on untreated roads and pavements.

A number of gritters will be on alert across the country ready to treat major roads to ensure Scotland keeps moving.

As the cold snap arrives drivers are to be prepared for winter conditions. You can find out what to pack in your emergency kit here .
