Snow and ice to hit Scotland as yellow weather warning extended for whole weekend

More snow and ice is set to hit Scotland over the next 24 hours a yellow weather warning has been extended into Sunday.

The Met Office have issued a fresh weather warning for freezing temperatures across the majority of Scotland.

Blizzard like conditions are expected to hit the country, with the west coast being warned of Arctic winds.

Forecasters say strong winds are likely to lead to some travel disruption and coastal regions could be impacted by large waves.

“Treacherous” ice conditions are expected to develop followed by freezing rain.

Experts say significant disruption is possible in the worst hit areas.

Warnings have been raised about dangerous driving conditions and longer journey times are expected for travel.

Outbreaks of snow are expected in Strathclyde, Grampian, Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire on Sunday, turning to rain as the afternoon progresses.

Freezing rain is expected in the Highlands and Eilean Siar.

The Met Office say: “Sporadic snowfall, mainly over higher ground of Scotland at first, may increasingly turn to freezing rain overnight Saturday into Sunday, whilst moving eastwards and expanding across other parts of Scotland and Northern England.

“This freezing rain is likely to be quite localised, but where it does occur will rapidly cause icy and somewhat treacherous stretches on roads and pavements.

“There is very low confidence in how extensive this freezing rain will be, although it is likely to fall in at least a few places within this warning area.

“There is a small chance that it could become more widespread through the course of Sunday morning, especially across Scotland.

“Milder air will steadily arrive from the west during Sunday daytime, slowly confining the ice risk further east and south through the day, and mainly to higher ground.”
