Snow and hail storms hit Liverpool after scorching mini-heatwave

A "flurry" of snow and hail hit parts of Liverpool this afternoon - just one week on from the city enjoying 21C temperatures.

Parts of south Liverpool and Bootle were hit with snow and hail today, as the cold snap continues to hit.

The snow storms also city parts of Wirral and around Liverpool parks too.

The Met Office warned "widespread" frost would hit Liverpool tonight and temperatures could plunge as low as -2C.

Forecasters said today and tonight would be: "Mostly dry with clear spells across the region with any lingering showers in the far east and the south easing during the evening.

"Clear spells will continue overnight for another cold night with widespread frost to form. Breezy. Minimum temperature -2 °C."

Social media was abuzz with people spotting snow falling in their area, while it was still sunny.

Tony Hardwick posted a video of snow falling on Twitter, saying: "a flurry of snow".

Amelia Moody said: "Thought the blossoms were falling of the trees in the garden but no, it’s snow?!"

Ant also posted on Twitter: "Mother of all snow storms driving back from Lancaster to then full on sun! Madness!"

And Cameron James said: "Just to make sure everyone's up-to-date on the live weather report, the snow has reached Liverpool!"

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Met Office said: "Dry, sunny start, but cloud tending to build throughout the day.

"Remaining mostly dry with isolated showers in the west, though a band of heavy rain arriving overnight. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

For this weekend forecasters expect it to remain cold, as "wintry showers" are predicted on Saturday and Sunday.
