Snow and hail forecast in parts of Greater Manchester this week

April showers are set to bring snow and hail to some parts of Greater Manchester this week.

According to forecasters there will be a return of blustery showers, sleet and chilly temperatures in the region from Monday night onwards.

Arctic winds will be blustering into the north-west, causing the change in the weather.

The blustery showers are expected to arrive overnight on Monday into Tuesday.

For most of the region they will fall as rain, but in hilly areas and on the Pennines there could be a bit of snow.

The chilly and damp weather is expected to continue into Tuesday, with a mixture of bright spells and showers.

At times there could be hail, while at the top of the Pennines there could be some snow flurries.

However, forecasters said the snow will not be thick and it is not expected to remain for long.

Gales are also possible on Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Overnight temperatures are expected to dip to 4C to 5C and by the end of the week they could drop near freezing.

This means there will be a few frosty mornings and the chance of ice on the roads.

By the weekend temperatures will recover slightly, with highs of 12C forecast.

"There might be hail in those showers - it will look wintry but it will be hail rather than snow.

"There is a chance of seeing snow on the tops of the Pennines, but it isn't likely to accumulate."

She added: "That will be the weather for this week. It will be fairly cold. Last week we had a warm sunny week, but this week will be colder with rain at times."

A spokesman for The Weather Channel said: "From Monday, marked low pressure migrating from the north-west to south-east will bring cloudy, wetter and chillier conditions.

“Sleet or light snow can be expected at higher elevations from Tuesday to Thursday, and even fall at lower elevations on Wednesday. Wind chill will effect temperatures, making the mercury feel closer to 0C at times.”
