Snorkeller missing at Melbourne beach

Police are searching for a snorkeller who has gone missing off Melbourne's Altona beach. (AAP)

Police are searching for a woman who has gone missing in the water near the pier at Altona beach in Melbourne's west.

The 20-year-old woman from Ashwood in the city's east was snorkelling with friends at about 11.15am on Saturday when she disappeared.

A large search is underway involving local law enforcement, water police, specialist divers, and a police helicopter.

The search will continue into Saturday evening.

It comes as Victoria faces its worst six months on record for drowning deaths, with 35 fatalities since last July.

Seven people have drowned in the past month.
