Snoring more could be a result of lockdown, expert claims

Have you noticed that yours or your partner's snoring is worse lately? Well, there might be a reason for that.

According to Stephen Makinde, an osteopath and clinical director of Perfect Balance Clinic, this could be due to the lockdown.

The expert believes the restrictions we're currently enduring could also be leading to physical restrictions with our breathing.

He says emotional struggles, which may be heightened by the current situation, can cause people to snore and are often overlooked, reports The Mirror.

"People can have emotional things that are locked inside them, like if they're in a bad relationship, or believe they can't open up about something, feeling congested and locked up, such as in the current situation where life is restricted," he told LadBible.

"That's potentially going to manifest itself as a restriction or obstruction of their airways because their subconscious is telling them to restrict themselves perhaps, albeit the mechanism not being fully understood.

"So it may present as snoring in some people. It's very individual for every person."

Stephen said other factors including changes in diet or hormones being affected can also cause people to snore - adding it's a side people "don't address enough".

Sitting at a computer all day long can also have an impact as it affects posture and can lead to an increase in snoring, but Stephen says it's often coupled with the emotional side of the stress of the workload and relationships at home which can trigger it.

While snoring is often never a cause of "just one thing", Stephen said "pretty much every time" it's something emotional which has led to it occurring in his experience.
