Wreck of the week: Essex. This former Baptist church in Kirby Cross, Frinton-on-Sea, is not configured for domestic use: £100,000-plus should raise some internal walls and fit a kitchen and bathroom, on top of the £100,000 asking price. Planners might let you pull it down and start afresh, and there is room for a spacious potential garden. Passing traffic can get heavy.

In the country: Isle of Wight. A mile from the sea in Freshwater, and of venerable vintage, sits this three-bedder. It is garnished with beams and fireplaces, while outside are large gardens. Bargain of the week: Somerset. The price has already shrunk from £675,000 to £595,000, and it would be worth far more than the former figure but for a public foot path running past the door and down the middle of its land. Also, a neighbour has right of access across the track along the length of the grounds. But if you can tolerate him and the odd hiker you will rejoice in two acres of land with a stream by the village of Chilcompton and a five-bed stone barn. There's a studio over the detached car port.
