Wreck of the week: County Durham. This £225,000 one-bed cottage in Cowshill, Upper Weardale, has an attached ruined barn with planning permission to be annexed. The cottage is newly renovated, but it will take £50,000 to convert the barn. It’s in an acre of its own land amid miles of rural glories, only accessed by a rough farm track.

In the country: Renfrewshire. Spacious inside and out, this three-bed cottage in Lochwinnoch is sited on former estate land 15 miles from Glasgow airport. It’s a shame you have to share this former farmyard with two attached neighbours and a couple of detached ones, but at £295,000 it’s relatively cheap.
