Wreck of the week: Essex. Rayne near Braintree is the setting for this 16th-century farmhouse and detached barn. The four-bedroom home has been recently inhabited but is perilously dilapidated and serious money is needed for the rescue work. The grade II listing may constrain any daring ambitions, but £375,000 gets you six downstairs rooms and the potential to expand into the barn, and half an acre of land.

This was built in 1590 amid the ruins of a 13th-century Knights Templars preceptory near Ludlow, and the original fireplace, oak floors and fragments of wall paintings have survived the intervening centuries. A modernising hand in the 17th century added a panelled drawing room and garderobe, and the staircase is courtesy of the Georgians. It sits in two acres overlooking miles of open countryside. Cost: £690,000.
