Snooping around – in pictures

In town: Kent. Looks are deceiving – the shopping centre is just a walk from this three-bed, £385,000, 17th-century cottage in Tonbridge. Beams, a brick fireplace and a floriferous cottage garden are legacies of its rustic past. It’s a shame the garage and most of the garden are the other side of the shared drive. It also needs updating.

In the country: North Yorkshire. With Thornton Dale being an idyllic base for the North York Moors, this has served time as an elegant, three-bed holiday let. There’s scope to expand into the loft, but outside there’s no garden, although you do get a garage. Cost: £320,000.

Wreck of the week: Shropshire. This seven-bed Georgian house in Shrewsbury has been a hotel, so needs extensive rejuvenation – £150,000 could be swallowed by its sheer size. The multiple rooms are aristocratically proportioned, and a roof terrace offers views over town. It is a shame it's on a busy town centre highway shared with some less lovely commercial buildings, but there’s room for a garden in the car park. Yours for £425,000.

Bargain of the week: West Yorkshire. The asking price has had £100,000 shorn off in the hope of a quick sale, which means for £495,000 you can lord it over five dramatic bedrooms, an acre of garden and 4.5 acres of woodland. The house, near Luddendenfoot, is all Gothic bombast with arched windows, ornate ceilings plasterwork, panelling and marble fireplaces, and has been stylishly renovated.
