In the country: Gloucestershire. This three-bedder in Kempsford, near Lechlade, is on the market for £399,000. It has an inglenook and an Aga, wood and stone floors, and a pretty garden. It’s a shame one of the three bedrooms is tiny, and all have restricted head height. It overlooks the village green.

Wreck of the week: Devon. Reckon on about £100,000 to rewire, replumb, reinvigorate and extend this four-bed detached house. Yours for £350,000, it is less than half-a-mile from the millionaires’ playground of Salcombe. Outside, the garden is unusually large, and there’s also space for a second house (subject to planning); inside, however, none of the bedrooms are generously sized and one is downstairs.

Dream home: Canterbury. Manicured lawns, a "secret" rose garden, a pond and poly tunnels are enough to make five-bedroom Stoneleigh house in Petham a gardener's dream, while the tennis court and paddocks will appeal to sports fans. Inside, you can enjoy the view from a double-aspect drawing room, or hang out in one of the three other reception rooms. On top of the £945,000 guide price you may want to spend a little more updating some of the decor.
